Now, this is almost funny. I received the following message from Sherrod Brown today.
I can not believe he sent this, knowing that Obama just announced his plan to establish his own political action group! O wants to raise big bucks to help others, like him, elected as well as influence government policy through lobbyists and other means; this request to overturn Citizens United is sort of like "the pot calling the kettle black", isn't it?
"There's a birthday coming up on January 21st. You may not know about it, but it's a pretty big one. And no, it's not mine (that's not for another 10 months).
January 21st marks the 3rd birthday of Citizens United, the Supreme Court ruling that let an unprecedented amount of special interest cash in our elections.
I'm sure Karl Rove and the Kochs will be celebrating. Their ability to buy influence in elections is still going strong -- and it's our democracy that pays the price.
But I have an idea to rain on their parade. This year, I'm joining forces with Sens. Franken, Begich, Tester, Baucus, and Udall to reaffirm our support to overturn Citizens United.
Reaffirm your opposition to outside spending in our elections -- sign the petition to oppose Citizens United today!
In the three short years that Citizens United has been around, outside spending in elections has skyrocketed. Outside groups spent $1.1 billion -- you read that right, billion -- in the 2012 election alone.
Corporations shouldn't be able to spend unlimited millions on elections with no limits and no disclosure. Despite what Citizens United says, corporations are not people. They don't go to birthday parties. They don't have to choose between buying groceries and paying medical bills. They don't have to worry about finding a job, or paying their student loans, or sending their kids to college.
With Citizens United's third birthday coming up fast, we need to show that our grassroots efforts to overturn this decision are stronger and more powerful than ever before. Add your name today.
Citizens United is eroding our democratic process. It's going to be a long and drawn-out fight to reverse the damage. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. I have fought Citizens United from the beginning, and I am ready to continue that fight for as long as it takes.
I'll need your support every step of the way. And I'm asking you to reaffirm that support right now. Sign the petition today.
The audacity of a career politician, who has taken contributions from corporations, like Forest City, Cleveland Clinic, American Electric Power, American Financial Group, First Energy and AK Steel and PACs to make this request of me. Sherrod Brown knows, full well, that Dem candidates secure millions of dollars from the following super pacs; J Street, Intl Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Operating Engineers Union, American Assn for Justice, American Fedn of St/Cnty/Munic Employees, Plumbers/Pipefitters Union, American Federation of Teachers, Machinists/Aerospace Workers Union, Teamsters Union, United Food & Commercial Workers Union, National Assn of Letter Carriers, National Assn of Realtors, Service Employees International Union, Communications Workers of America, National Education Assn, International Assn of Fire Fighters, Carpenters & Joiners Union, Ironworkers Union, Laborers Union, American Postal Workers Union and United Auto Workers. We all know that the Republicans have their own big money contributors.
Do you honestly think Brown worries about a job for you or me? You thinks he wakes up wondering if our kids have food, clothes and a clean, warm home? One way to end this fraud is to move to open primaries! WE must break this 2 party system as soon as possible.
If you don't think you are over taxed and under represented; you must have your head stuck in the mud!
